Beaded jewelery comes in many shapes and forms, stemming from an illustrious history that can be dated back to over seventy thousand years ago, when people first made beads from seashells and eggshells to be worn as adornments. Soon ochre was also used and shells and beads were inscribed with patterns and colored with natural pigments.
Strung on sinew and various natural fibres, beads were worn as physical adornment but also became popular as gifts. Even in today’s times the clergy wear rosary beads are used in meditation and prayer by religions as diverse as Catholicism, Hinduism, Buddhism and Islam.
A tradition of weaving with beads became popular on the African continent, with meanings being woven into beadwork, to be given as lovers tokens. Beads vary in size, texture, color and materials depending upon their intended purpose. Beads can be made from clay, stone, plastic, metal, ceramic, pearls, gemstones, crystal, glass, wood and other natural materials.
It can be made into armbands, wristbands, headbands, anklets, necklaces, bracelets, earrings and even into rings. This is a very versatile craft and beads can be worn for any occasion, whether a formal dinner or a day out on the beach. Color is an important feature of this type of jewelery and it can be crafted to suit your specific needs.
Due to the very versatile nature of beads, due to the variety of materials, shapes and sizes, the possible design ideas are virtually limitless. Beaded gloves, beaded tops and even beaded belts are still popular accessories to any outfit. Beaded necklaces can be worn in short lengths, choker style or in long multi-colored strands that reach to waist length.
There are no rules when it comes to wearing beads, so mix and match and approach it with a sense of fun and daring. Mix and match solid colors in a variety of sizes and textures or for a simple and elegant look wear a single strand of the same bead style, but varying in size from large to small.
